Moonsighting for the 1st of Shawwal 1430 AH.

A Teleconference was held by NASIMCO tonight (September 19) with the presence of Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi, and attended by the presidents and representatives of various Jamaats in North America.

Based on the discussion held during the teleconference, we would like to inform the community of the following status on the crescent sighting for month of Shawwal and the day of Eid-el-Fitr 1430:

There was no confirmed reports of crescent sighting in North America by sunset of Saturday. Therefore, Muqallideen of Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Al-Husaini Sistani are to observe fast on Sunday, September 20th as the last day of Holy Ramadhan and observe Monday, September 21st as the day of
Eid-el-Fitr.

For those momineen who are the followers (Muqalleed) of Ayatullah Al Khoie, Sunday, September 20th will be the day of Eid-el-Fitr based on confirmed sighting of crescent in other parts of the World.

Zakat of Fitra

Zakat al-Fitra is a religious tax/alms (zakat) paid on the day when Muslims break the fasting period at the end of the month of Ramadhan. Fitra for a person is given on a weight of three kilograms (one sa'a) on any food commodity like wheat, barley, rice, millet, raisins or dates. Ayatullah Seestani is of the opinion that the item that is not a staple food in your town should not be given in Fitrah. Cash value in lieu of any foodstuff mentioned can be given as Fitrah.

Based on the above, The Jamaat recommends Fitrah in the amount of $14/person. Please note that this is only a recommendation from the Jamaat and the exact amount paid in Fitrah is the responsibility of each individual.
